Why AllChurches Trust is supporting TLG

17th May 2021

Allchurches Trust Grants Officer, Andrew Bass, writes about what inspired Allchurches Trust to support TLG through its TLG Make Lunch and TLG Box of Hope programmes.

Last year, Allchurches Trust gave £23 million to Christian organisations to equip them to have a positive and transformative impact on lives and communities – including TLG.

Why TLG?

When TLG made its application to double the impact of its TLG Make Lunch clubs over a three year period - both in terms of number of clubs and supporting children and families – we could see that their vision and strategic aims met all of the core criteria of the programme and would have a huge impact on the organisation and the wider community.

We were inspired to support TLG to realise its vision in helping end holiday hunger and also give churches the support they need to be a part of the solution.

Making that decision to fund a project isn’t a split decision, it requires a lot of research and contact with an applicant to understand more about the project and what they are hoping to achieve, as well as a lot of internal discussions to ensure the project meets our requirements.

‘Transforming’ into Box of Hope

Shortly after the TLG Make Lunch grant was awarded, COVID-19 hit. TLG Make Lunch clubs had to adapt their provision in line with social distancing restrictions, so TLG supported churches to deliver emergency food and wellbeing parcels instead, as part of its Box of Hope COVID-19 response. Having committed to TLG’s vision and the fantastic work they were doing, we supported this new initiative with a COVID-19 relief grant in 2020.

To see that, with our support, they have delivered over 1 million meals to families throughout the pandemic is what puts my job and Allchurches’ role into perspective – our grants are enabling organisations to go above and beyond to support those most in need.

We’re delighted that our funding has been able to support churches to adapt and reach out to those most in need, to provide not only essentials, but a friendly face and a listening ear. The church has always been on the frontline of caring for the most vulnerable, and it’s amazing to hear that, through TLG’s help and resolve, churches have been able to continue to support people through the pandemic and deliver one million meals to families across the UK through the TLG Box of Hope initiative.
