Understanding Racial Trauma

On Saturday 17th May 2025, TLG and HTL church will be hosting a special event to safely explore and understand the impact of racial trauma. This in-person gathering will provide a safe space to learn, share, and grow together. Through insightful discussions and interactive activities, we aim to deepen our understanding of the impact of racial trauma and explore ways to promote healing and unity within our community. We spoke to our host, Elaine Sutherland from HTL Church, to share why understanding racial trauma is crucial for us all.
Hi, I’m Elaine Sutherland and I lead HTL Church. To enable everyone to flourish as God intended, I believe we all need to develop our understanding of the life experience of those different to ourselves, especially in the area of racial trauma. Our church, like many in the UK, reflects a huge diversity of lived experiences. One of the main barriers to growth in our discipleship, community, and mission is the lack of understanding that we have of the daily realities faced by those around us.
To help us grow in this area, I am delighted that HTL Church is partnering with Transforming Lives for Good, sponsored by Leicester Diocese and New Wine to facilitate training in Understanding Racial Trauma – a safe and supportive space to explore the impact of racial trauma.
Hosted by a trained team this invitation is to parents, community workers, educators, business leaders, and church members to come together, learn, share, and understand the effect of racial trauma while exploring ways to promote healing and unity.
I have grown personally over the last few years from participating in similar workshops which have strongly informed how I lead in our own church family. My hope is that people from all spheres of society will be equipped to handle this topic better in their places of work, schools, universities, and churches as we all seek to follow Jesus’ command to “love one another”.
